Having a business means more than production numbers, targets and annual statistics to us. We want to be socially involved and we believe that our organization also needs to show that side of business. So we fill our assembly department vacancies professionally, with very motivated disabled people. They are left out of the set labour process because of their handicaps and because of this; they need extra support to be able to get to work in the set job market. Everyone has the right to fully develop their talents. That is why it is important that ‘s Heeren Loo’s clients do not only get the chance to do meaningful work within the walls of their care facility, but also in the set business world. Approximately 20 ‘s Heeren Loo’s clients work at Smit plastic. To the complete satisfaction of the company and their own! When Smit plastic was approached in 2006 with the question if there was work for ‘s Heeren Loo’s clients, we halted between two opinions. We are a commercial company that delivers high-quality products. To produce those products, a number of simple assembly activities are necessary. If the opportunity arises for those activities to be executed by people who like to do it, then that would be very appealing to us. But because we are indeed a commercial company, we have to deliver on time. We asked ourselves if the clients would be able to handle the pressure. What really gave us the go-ahead to start the project was Vacuvin’s enthusiastic response. This large customer of ours also offers work to people with a mental handicap. Their good experiences swayed us into taking part as well.

In September 2006, a number of clients started work at Smit plastic. It has been a success story from the first day. The clients take their work very seriously. They always start right on time and their dedication is heartwarming. It is also inspiring for our own employees, who initially waited to see which way the cat would jump. That isn’t odd, because almost nobody had ever come in contact with people with a mental handicap. When it became clear that we had gotten new colleagues with a good sense of humor and who did their work with great enthusiasm, all of our own employees became very accepting. We handle the disabilities normally. If something doesn’t please us, we just say so. If they make mistakes, it is pointed out to them, because that is exactly how we treat the rest of the staff. We have no reason to overly pamper the clients. Smit plastic’s products are manufactured in two buildings which are across from each other. In one building, the parts made of synthetic material are produced, while the parts are put together in the other building. The clients mostly work in the assembly department. And in the meantime, two clients have moved on to the production department. That is also going very well; the people involved see it as a promotion. And as a matter of fact it is, because there is more pressure. Riekie Vink is one of the clients who now works in the production department. “First, I did assembly work in De Batouwe. That was nice, but this is better. The boxes which I put stickers on go all over the world. And it’s because of me. I work four days a week. I get along well with my colleagues and I’ve gotten new work shoes. Everything is really great. I’ve never called in sick; the work is too much fun. You count.”

Smit plastic has an assembly department with ultrasonic laser equipment, among others, where different synthetic material and metal assemblies can be put together professionally.
